Martial arts have been a part of my life since I was 15 years old, when I first took up taekwondo. It was a decision that changed my life in so many positive ways and I have been a dedicated practitioner ever since. From taekwondo, I later expanded my knowledge and skills by studying other martial arts. Each martial arts style brings something unique, and I’ve tried to keep what works for me and make it my own through careful study.
My Journey From a Novice to an Expert in Taekwondo:
My journey in taekwondo started in 1988. I was inspired to learn taekwondo for self-defense and fitness, and I was immediately drawn to the discipline and focus required. I began my training at a local dojang. The training was difficult, but it helped me to grow. Nothing worth achieving is easy. I learned sparring techniques and honed my skills in taekwondo forms, which are pre-arranged sequences of movements. Over time, I became more confident and skilled in the sport, eventually going on to compete regionally and nationally.
How Taekwondo Helped Me Become Physically & Mentally Stronger:
Taekwondo not only helped me become physically stronger through training, but it has also helped me develop mental toughness. The study of martial arts requires focus, discipline, perseverance, and just plain grit, which are all qualities that have helped me in other areas of my life. Taekwondo also taught me how to be more in control of my thoughts, emotions, and actions, leading to greater mental clarity and peace.
The Benefits of Joining a Taekwondo School:
Joining a local taekwondo club was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I was fortunate to have a great instructor who not only taught me the technical aspects of the sport but also instilled the five tenets of taekwondo which are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit. I’ve applied those tenets to my life outside of taekwondo so many times it’s hard to express. As instructor I do my best to carry on that tradition and pass on those values to our students. The martial arts lessons apply inside and outside of class.
What I Learned Through My Experiences and the Challenges I Faced Along the Way:
My experiences in martial arts have taught me a lot about discipline and perseverance. I’ve faced many challenges along the way, but the sport has given me the tools to overcome them. I’ve learned so much about myself and the world through my experiences in martial arts and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
In conclusion, my journey in martial arts, starting with taekwondo, has been a life-changing experience. From a novice to an expert, I’ve learned so much about myself and developed both physically and mentally. I would highly recommend anyone who is considering martial arts to try it. That might be taekwondo, hapkido, kali, krav maga or some other style. No matter the style, you will see the positive impact it can have on your life.
